Outdoor Frosh “In the City” events are August 28-30. Most trips leave around 7AM Saturday, August 31* and return around 5PM Monday, September 2. Check your option page for a detailed itinerary!

*Camping Frosh leaves 12PM Friday, August 30.

Absolutely! As long as you’re excited to take on the wilderness, we would love to have you! Options do not require previous experience* in the activity and involve moderate to strenuous physical activity. If you’re nervous about taking on a new challenge, check out Camping Frosh! It was created as an ultimate outdoor introduction – you’ll learn how to camp, canoe, and hike!

*We expect Whitewater Kayak participants to be strong swimmers and Mountain Biking participants to know how to ride a bike. You do not need  prior kayak or mountain bike experience to participate!

All transportation, food during the trip, campsite fees, and group gear (tents, stoves, etc) is included in the cost, as well as “In The City” events before the trip, a t-shirt, and a year-long membership to the McGill Outdoors Club! Individual gear such as backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping mats are not included. We have some to rent out, but cannot guarantee one for everyone!

If you have camping gear (or can borrow some), please plan to bring it to Outdoors Frosh! Basic camping gear such as a sleeping bag and sleeping mat is required for all options except Mountain Biking (check the packing list for a full list of what you will need). Thin indoor sleeping bags/blankets and yoga mats as sleeping pads are fine if you bring a warm sweater and sweat pants to sleep in.

The McGill Outdoors Club has a limited amount of sleeping bags ($5), sleeping mats ($1), and large backpacks ($5, priority to Hiking frosh participants) available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee one for everyone! To rent you will need to leave a cheque or credit card deposit – see the MOC gear page for more information. Please indicate on your registration form if you are planning to rent from us.

Sleeping bags and mats can be purchased downtown at Canadian Tire or Atmosphere.

Outdoors Frosh is a rain or shine event! We strongly believe that the outdoors can be fun no matter the conditions. By the end of frosh, we will have convinced you of the same!

Absolutely, but please indicate this in the emergency medical information section of the registration form. If you have an anaphylactic allergy, it is your responsibility to bring your EpiPen and know where it is at all times! Feel free to email frosh@mcgilloutdoorsclub.ca with any questions related to the management of a medical condition during Outdoor Frosh and how we can best accommodate you.

No. Our coordinators and leaders are not certified as professional guides or instructors. They are experienced and passionate volunteers dedicated to introducing you to the outdoors community at McGill!

There are inherent risks involved in outdoor sports due to factors outside of our control, like the weather. Our leaders are experienced in making safe decisions in a variety of conditions and at least one coordinator per option has a Wilderness First Aid certification or higher. It is up to you to decide if you are comfortable with the risks of participating in Outdoors Frosh.

Absolutely! If you have group gear we can use or extra personal gear to lend to another froshie on your trip, we will give you a gear system credit equal to the club’s rental fee for that item. That means that your next gear rental or membership renewal will be discounted!

Outdoors Frosh! Before the trips go out we have a great line-up of “In the City” events to help you explore Montreal and meet like-minded students from all faculties, including an apartment crawl, amazing race, and movie night! You’ll get all the elements of a ‘classic’ frosh experience AND go on a super cool trip that will make all your new rez friends jealous.

It is technically possible to register for both Faculty Frosh and Outdoors Frosh. Most people who do this attend Faculty Frosh events in place of our "In the City" events, then leave on the trips Friday or Saturday with Outdoors Frosh. In general, we discourage this because you will miss out on group bonding in both froshes and are more likely to miss important trip-related information. Please note that you may not participate in Whitewater Kayak frosh if you do not attend the pool sessions before the trip.

As much as we would love to give everyone the opportunity to attend Outdoors Frosh regardless of financial situation, the number of bursaries we can offer is unfortunately subject to change every year based on demand. You will need to register and pay in advance to hold your spot, then fill out this form to apply. If you are selected, we will reimburse you after registration closes.

No. We encourage froshies to keep their phones turned off and in their backpacks for the weekend to help them engage with their peers and conserve battery in case of emergency. If you have left them messages, they likely will not see them or have time to respond until the end of the trip. If you were listed as your child’s emergency contact, the trip coordinator will contact you in case of emergency. If you urgently need to reach your child and they are not responding, please emailfrosh@mcgilloutdoorsclub.ca and we will find a way to put you in contact or relay a message.
